  TRAINING ON MICROSCOPE

Microscope Training course conducted by Stefan M. Luger, Microscope Consultant and Hands-on Trainer.

Learn the techniques that will allow you to enjoy the most from your investment in your dental operating microscope.  This intensive course is designed for the new or current user who has never had formalized training on the scope. You will be taught everything needed to transition into becoming a good scope user. Along with the basics, many advanced techniques will be demonstrated. It is well documented that using a dental microscope has a learning curve  to become proficient. We can help you shorten the time significantly.  It is not difficult… only different. It takes practice using it correctly to obtain good results.

This is hands-on microscope training course  where you are taught on your   scope in your own clinic with your assistant by your side.  Together you  will learn to work as a team utilizing enhanced four-handed dentistry techniques.  Because you will be applying what you have learned immediately, you will have a more effective experience.  It is much easier learning on your own equipment and having it set up for you rather than traveling to some distant location, taking notes and attempting to duplicate what you have learned from a table mounted scope or equipment set up differently than that in your own office.

The microscope is first adjusted for maneuverability and then par-focused to your eyes which allows for switching from one magnification level to another without the need for refocusing. Then the video-camera is synchronized to the image, centered on the monitor and adjusted for proper North - South orientation so that what you see in the eye-pieces is what is shown on the monitor.

We adjust the operators and assistant’s stool for the best ergonomics and comfort. Operatory set-up is discussed for maximizing activities with a minimum of motion. The microscope’s position, dentist’s position, and assistant’s position is shown along with how to orient the patient for working on the maxillary and mandibular arches.

Demonstration for the various reference points and approach angles that are needed for seeing all the surfaces of the teeth with minimal handling of the scope. One learns to move the mirror or patient before moving the scope. Dentists are taught how to work with their eyes remaining on the eyepieces as much as possible.

The assistant is taught how to preposition the patient properly. We teach them how to bring the patient into focus even while the dentist is working. Also shown is how the assistant can make small adjustments to the positioning of the scope again while the dentist is working which prevents him from breaking stride. Very much on the table is the “zone of influence” which is discussed and how it can either delay or accelerate the procedures along.

After an hour or so of going over the basics, we examine a patient under the scope and then the dentist does a scaling or a full examination in order to view every surface of every tooth.

The rest of the day is spent working on patients or on the models. We correct and show different options for seeing the same area. We discuss and apply enhanced four-handed dentistry techniques as you are learning to work as a team. The goal is to continue working without breaking stride caused by reaching for instruments and materials. These chores should be performed by the assistant similar to the way a surgical nurse works with a surgeon in an operating room. One will find assistant utilization much more valuable than ever before.

New smaller instruments for the microscope are shown and demonstrated along with other dental topics of consequence to the scope centered practice. By the end of the day, we will have worked on variety of patients and you will be well on your way to becoming a scope user.
